One of the most popular sewing terms is not as simple as it might seem at first glance! Let's figure out how to spell this word.

Many needlewomen sooner or later ask themselves the question, how is it right, a recess or a tuck. And the arguments are both for that and for another option!

For example, some argue that it is correct to write "undercut", from building by points. Others are sure that the "tuck", because it is "tucked". As we all remember, the surest way to test an unstressed vowel in the root of a word is to choose a cognate in which the dubious letter will be stressed. It remains only to figure out how the term that interests us appeared in order to find the right test word.

Entertaining etymology

Since it will not be possible to maintain the intrigue to the end, let’s say right away: the correct option is a tuck, and the closest relative of the word is “trick”. However, alas, even here our problem vowel is not stressed. So, we look further!

How to make perfect tucks without the hassle

“Tach”, according to various explanatory dictionaries from Ozhegov to Dahl, simply means “sewing”. Over time, this verb has taken many forms: stitch, stitch, stitch and so on.And as we know, tucks grind off. The test word that we were looking for was always nearby: in the verb “grind”, the dubious vowel is under the stress we need without leaving any discrepancies.

By the way, the word "stitch" came to us from the shoe business. They used to say "sew in a wheelbarrow", that is, sew through the stitch. Moreover, the verb "tachat" is directly connected with an ordinary car, a trolley, which is rolled in front of you. The farther into the past, the more foggy the etymology of the word becomes, but the Church Slavonic “tachati” meant “roll”, which in turn is interwoven with Czech táčet and Polish taczаć, which also meant “twist, roll”.

Pattern adjustment: tucks and embossed seams

So if you accidentally forget how to, undercut or tuck, remember about the car, you won’t be mistaken!
