Two-in-one workshop: how to put a patch on and how to replace a torn part of a backpack.
This otherwise intact and durable backpack received such damage, as the owner, according to him, wore two large laptops in it. The corners of the laptops made holes in the backpack's fabric that were creeping out. Here we see attempts to sew them up, but the result was both temporary and not very beautiful.
In the master class below, there are two ways to repair such damage to a backpack. In one case - with the replacement of the part, in the second - with the installation of a patch. Here I had to apply both options, but in each case it is worth orienting ourselves according to the situation.
As a result, it is difficult to guess the fact of repair, and the backpack is quite viable.
I did some seams manually, because it was necessary to go through very thick or inconvenient places for access. But if your machine works well with medium and heavy fabrics, you can sew on it. The essence of this does not change.
DIY bag repair
You will need:
- patches of suitable material for repair;
- a spreader;
- tailor's scissors;
- marker for tissue;
- ruler;
- tape measure;
- "spider web";
- tailor pins;
- hand needle and thread for panning;
- if you sew by hand - a rather large, comfortable and sharp needle for hand sewing and a thimble;
- if you are sewing on a machine, it is better to take a needle for a jersey;
- strong not thin threads;
- iron and ironing board.
How to repair jeans torn on a knee: a master class
Step 1
The backpack must be washed and dried before work.
Now all the seams that hold the damaged parts or the damaged parts of the parts need to be torn apart. In parallel, it will be possible to understand the design of your backpack and understand what sequence was sewn (this will help with the repair). Here, for example, all seams are sewn with braid: first you need to rip off the braid, then flog the seams themselves.
We remove all the threads and evaluate the degree of damage to the parts. If the part is torn severely and / or is easy to remove, it can be replaced. And in some cases, you can do with a patch. We have both options. It would be nice to squeeze open places if possible iron or steam.
Step 2
It was decided to replace the large semicircular part. We evaporate the part from the backpack, iron it and use it as a template for cutting a new part.
On a narrow damaged part, we will put a patch at full height, covering the damaged area. We determine the required size of the patch, cut it with allowances on the right and left, iron the side edges to the center inside out. If the upper and lower edges of your patch do not go to the seams, as in our case, then add and iron allowances must also be top and bottom.
Step 3
First we put a patch. Glue it to the "spider line" and sew it (in our case, on both sides, since the upper and lower edges will go to the seams).
We perform a seam connecting the repaired part with a zipper and a lining.
Step 4
Now the part that we replace completely. To sew it evenly, it is better to sew the seams from the center to the edges, in two stages, starting from the middle. We determine the center using a centimeter tape.
Put a mark.
On the stitched part, we also find the middle, combine the marks and pin the half of the part quite often (since the material is dense, inelastic).
We make a seam from the center to the edge.
Repeat on the other side.
Step 5
Connect the open parts of the backpack. We chop off pins, wring, remove pins, stitch.
We return to the place the braid covering the seam: we pin with pins ...
... and make a seam.
Step 6
The part that we replace completely, we have already sewn on top and processed the seam with braid. Now we sew in its sides.
Step 7
Now sew the bottom of the part. We pin the edge of the part with pins to the braid of lightning.
And we do a seam.
We return to place the braid.
Done.
